Headache!! Is it Dangerous???


Headache is a symptom and a disease which could be due to a simple cold or cancer. It has such wide range that it’s very difficult to make an immediate diagnosis or category.

How do I know my headache is not cancer?

First of all, let’s start with symptoms:

If you have a recurrent headache start jotting down thing which happens with it.

  • Where is the headache? Can you pinpoint the location?
  • How long does it last?
  • How severe is it? Grade it from 1-10
  • How frequently it occurs? Daily? Weekly?
  • What all it is associated with? Like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, etc.
  • How does it gets relieved? With medication? Rest? Vomiting?
  • Do you know beforehand that headache is about to come? Flickering of lights/ flashes etc.
  • How does it get aggravated? Bright light? Exhaustion? Hunger?

Once this history is made we’ll get to the part of examination and investigations. It could be a multisystem disorder or localized so the range of examinations is very wide. Let’s rule it out system wise:

Ophthalmology

Eyes/ Ophthalmology:

  • Vision test
  • Tonometry
Headache
ENT/ Otorhinolaryngology

ENT/ Otorhinolaryngology:

  • Nasal examination / endoscopy
  • Xray / CT Nose & PNS
  • Thyroid Function Test
  • Ear examination / CT temporal bone
Headache
Physician

Physician/Medicine:

  • Blood Pressure examination
  • Random Blood Sugar
  • Renal function Test
  • Liver function test
  • Cardiac function test
  • CT Head

These are just a few basic tests to see if the headache is related to these systems. Else it could be part of many other systems but then it’ll be related to systemic symptoms too.

Could a headache be treated at home?

Well, it all depends on the type of the headache.

If it’s a migraine and trigger is avoided then headache is avoided too. Stress is a big factor nowadays so if it’s a stress headache is relieved by distraction, meditation or rest.

Few basic home remedies like:

  • Meditation/ Yoga
  • Work out/Gym
  • Comfort food
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Cold compression on eyes.
  • Going out with friends/ family.
  • Watch TV/Movie.

All the above helps to certain limits.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry!!!

So first of all, rule out all diseases then revert to home remedies.

Thought like: I’m scared that it could be something dangerous!!!

It could be something dangerous, that’s why doctors are there. They’ll help you in detecting and treating the disease.

Denial could only take so far!!! In the end, you have to gather courage and visit a doctor. So it’s always sooner the better.

Is it cancer??

Let’s get you checked and investigated for it.

Doctors have tools like X-rays or CT scans to help us know the disease. Please be patient till we know what is wrong with you and we’ll help you.
