After such a long fight for equality, Gay relationships (LGBTQ) have been given right by sec 377 rule amendment this September. It was an old rule made in 1862 in British Era but with changing times the bend towards similar gender relationships had forced the country to review its IPC sections and amend the old rules.
It’s no longer a crime to indulge in Consensual Similar Gender Sex in India.
Why is it such a huge phobia to have same-sex relationships?
My personal thoughts are that it’s a personal choice of a person to show affection and choose the partner and we should not be dictating that choice. Since India is a free country Similar gender sex should have been legalized long before now.
India has portrayed itself as an emerging liberal country by providing Legalizing LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Community Rights by amending Sec 377.
I’m in favor of giving similar sex relationships equal status as others.
Consensual sex between adults in a private space, which is not harmful to women or children cannot be denied since it’s a matter of individual choice stated SC in Sec 377.
Many people (LGBTQ) have waited for decades to gain the recognition and it was their right which after a long battle has been attained. It is a positive step from India in providing Personal Liberty.
This law has given a new meaning to Personal Rights and is a new era for LBGTQ in these changing times.

Yes it has always been an individual’s choice and glad it has been legalised now. People would no longer have to stay in dark with the fear of non-acceptance.

In the land of Vatsyayana , I do not know why we have really not been able to come to terms with the various facets of sexuality.As long as two consenting adults are involved , it should be a personal choice.

It’s indeed a personal preference. I have read harrowing stories of young men and women being raped as a punishment for showing homosexual tendencies in India. The belief is these repeated rapes will help them forget or at least bury their homosexual tendencies. Isn’t it just barbaric? Glad that we are shovelling these backward thoughts to a side and putting forward our first step to progress.

Yes legalising gay sex is a welcome step. It will take a long time to bring about social change where people are not discriminated based on their sexual orientation.

it’s a decision which is 100 years late since it was personal choice and human right which should always have been ours to take not to fight for it and then attain.
It should be left to individual choice and the decision by supreme court is like a stamp on that

Very true, one should be free to exercise his choice in every field including sexuality, as long as it is not infringing somebody else’s rights. It had to happen sooner or later.

Section 377 was a huge leap in accepting the LGBT community as they are. We may still have miles to go but this is a great way to get the ball rolling. Informative article!

Considering gay sex a crime or unnatural is ridiculous. The sexual orientation of gay people is just as natural as that of heterosexuals. It is just the way mother nature makes them and to go around calling something natural a crime is very ignorant. Kudos to the supreme court for this great judgement.

Homosexuality is considered a taboo in a largely conservative Indian society which appears to be divided on the controversial issue. Freedom loving people (not necessarily belonging to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender or LGBT community) want homosexuality de-criminalised but many still consider it a “deviant behaviour” and not merely a question of one’s sexual orientation or preference. Finally I am one of the those who is happy with The Supreme Court making gay sex among consenting adults not a crime anymore. I Welcome “Celebratory” Verdict On Section 377.

It is definitely a step in the right direction and I sincerely hope legalised marriages come next. However, I do wonder if the changes in law will do anything to bring about changes in mindset.

Now that Supreme Court has done its part, the onus is on the people to welcome the decision and accept LGBTQ as a part of society at large. Hope the conservative mindsets change.

Individual choice should always be respected. Thank God that we have got rid of this archaic law. However, it is going to take much time for many people to come to terms with it. May respect be the key word here!

It is good to know that you stand with the LGBTQ community… Amending Sec 377 is a huge step in the right direction, but the community still needs a lot of support and compassion from the common people in general…

I was really astonished when the SC upheld this section in 2013. I am glad better sense has prevailed and we atleast have equality on the paper. Now we work towards making more social changes to ensure true equality.

Section 377 was ancient and the new verdict is indeed landmark. But another tough road is ahead, social acceptance. Quite an irony. Largest democratic nation and a land rich in culture and mythologies find it tough to accept sexual preference of citizen and they had to fight a legal battle. Hoping for better days and generation.
