Mental Health and #COVID-19 #CauseAChatter

We all know that we’re fighting an unknown Virus SARS CoV-2 which has caused a worldwide epidemic COVID-19. We’re discovering more about the virus but in the meanwhile, we all are taking precautions to protect ourselves. We all are under lockdown and we’re facing the Virus by Social distancing.

Precautions

  • Clean hands with soap and water for 20 seconds
  • Use > 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Stay indoor
  • Avoid contact with sick people
  • Social distancing
  • Use a mask when in public places
  • Cover mouth with elbow/ tissue while coughing

While these precautions are helping us in protecting us all against the virus. Social distancing is providing much-needed protection but it’s also causing a major spike in mental disorders. We all are under lockdown which is causing a lot of mental health issues in society.

Mental disorders during COVID-19:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Phobia
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Drug abuse disorder
  • Eating disorders

People are staying alone and inside the houses under lockdown. These conditions are causing a massive rise in Stress, Headaches, Anxiety & Depression in society.

Stress Factors:

  • Fear about loved ones/ self getting sick
  • Fear of death
  • Job insecurity
  • Uncertain future
  • Disruption of Routine life
  • Financial burdens
  • Burden of Work

How to achieve mental wellbeing?

  1. Keep calm and keep busy at work to avoid loneliness and sadness.
  2. Try and take deep breaths and meditate when you feel anxious. Think about something calm and peaceful.
  3. Be connected to people.
  4. Be helpful to people who are in need of support and care.
  5. Discuss your fear and phobias with others to lower the anxiety.
  6. Maintain wellbeing: keeping hydrated, eat well, walk and talk.  
  7. Maintain sleep hygiene
  8. Get facts do not believe in every information received on by media. Check facts before passing on the information.
  9. Do not spread rumors and fear in society.
  10. Keep a daily routine.
  11. Do things you love. Like Dancing, Gardening, Cooking, etc.
  12. Relax the mind and body
  13. Set up goals and complete them
  14. Keep your mind active by playing crosswords, puzzles, games.
  15. Be Happy and Positive

  1. Thank you so much for these tips. It is so easy to get depressed with all the sadness that is happening around us. A big one for me is all the false news that is going around. I agree, people must check the facts. Staying connected to people has helped me tremendously through these tough times.

  2. I have heard about a lot of people suffering from anxieties and stress due to the fallout of this pandemic. Being connected with family and friends, having a routine, keeping busy, being positive, meditating are some of the ways that are working for me.

  3. It is true that those not used to being indoors go crazy when they have no choice but to stay at home. Fortunately there are so many things we can do to keep ourselves occupied. That’s a great list of activities, Richa! We must follow the rules of social distancing to stay safe!
